About the Rice Miller Business Academy: RMBA is dedicated to offering business-focused training to rice millers in West Africa. This program caters to individuals working in rice milling and covers five crucial areas:
- Practical Marketing for Rice Mills: Equipping millers with essential marketing skills as rice markets expand.
- The Business of Rice Milling: Focusing on the economic aspects of rice milling, emphasizing good manufacturing practices and sustainability.
- Finance Essential for Rice Mills: Providing key financial skills, including cash flow management and accessing finance, to enhance financial stability.
- Developing Profitable Farmer Services: Addressing the business aspects of services such as irrigation, mechanization, and seed provision.
- Mastering Milling Operations: Covering technical operations within a rice milling environment.
Why RMBA Was Created: RMBA was established in response to the growing importance of rice as a staple crop in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in West Africa. The project, formerly known as the Competitive African Rice Initiative (CARI), has evolved to become the Market-Oriented Value Chain for Jobs and Growth in the ECOWAS Region (MOVE). RMBA specifically aims to enhance the capacity of rice companies to address critical challenges, including:
- Competing effectively in a progressively competitive market.
- Improving operations to produce high-quality rice competitively.
- Creating proactive, evidence-based commercial business plans.
- Efficiently managing financial operations.
- Developing commercially viable farmer services to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality paddy.
Course Rollout: In 2023, RMBA will be launching two vital courses:
- Practical Marketing for Rice Mills: Focusing on marketing skills to align with expanding rice markets.
- The Business of Rice Milling: Emphasizing the economics of rice milling and sustainability.
In 2024, two additional courses will be introduced:
- Finance Essential for Rice Mills: Covering financial skills, including cash flow management and bankability.
- Developing Profitable Farmer Services: Addressing the business aspects of services such as irrigation, mechanization, and seed provision.
While the training for these courses is scheduled for 2024, accepted trainers are expected to participate in the virtual classroom (online training) from September 25 to October 20, 2023. Please refer to Phase 1 for more details.
Eligibility: To be eligible for the Training of Trainer program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Technical experts with relevant skills and experience in any of the thematic areas covered by RMBA courses.
- Possess at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification in related subjects such as Marketing, Management, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Agribusiness, etc.
- Minimum experience of 10 years with a bachelor's degree or 5 years with a master's degree.
- Experience as trainers, training designers, facilitators, or coaches for adults in a business environment is highly valued.
- Encouragement for women to apply.
- Reside in Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, or Senegal.
- Proficiency in French and/or English in a business context. Proficiency in both languages is preferred.

Application and Selection Process:
- Request for application for trainer published: August 22, 2023.
- Application submission deadline: September 6, 2023.
- Evaluation of candidates: 3 days.
- Selection and invitation to participate in the Training of Trainers: September 11.
Training Process:
Phase 1: Virtual Classroom (September 25 – October 20, 2023)
- Blended learning Training of Trainers course, focusing on adult learning approaches and training and facilitation skills.
- Successful candidates receive a certificate of completion.
Phase 2: In-person Experiential Training (October 23 – 26, 2023)
- Practical Marketing for Rice Mills.
- The Business of Rice Milling.
Phase 3: Training Delivery (November 2023 – Date TBC)
- Practical Marketing for Rice Mills training with mill marketing practitioners.
- The Business of Rice Milling with mill managers and leaders.
Newly graduated trainers will deliver these courses with the guidance of master trainers.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I apply for more than one technical skill area? Yes, technical experts can indicate their preferred thematic areas, which can include one or multiple areas. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient skill and experience in at least one of the topics covered by the Training of Trainer courses.
Cost of the Training: There is no fee to participate in this training. For in-person training, transport, logistics, and accommodation costs will be covered by the program.
Leading Training After Graduation: After successfully completing the in-person training (Phase 2), candidates will be eligible for paid assignments to deliver training courses as part of the Rice Miller Business Academy. Phase 3 represents a paid assignment for trainers.
